How it Works
When students clean out their lockers (or even dorm rooms) at the end of the school year, we provide alternative containers for them to discard their new and slightly-used school supplies, books and clothes. We then collect all of the materials, sort them, and distribute them locally, nationally, and internationally – to children/students in need.
Elementary schools
- Once approved by the school, a note (we will provide) will be distributed to each teacher explaining the project.
- Containers are placed in each home room a week before locker clean-out time – NOT a contest.
- A note (we will provide) is sent home for the parents explaining the project.
- Students help make a difference in their community by donating items.
- Boxes and lost and found materials (if available) are picked up by the greenLockers team in a timely manner.
- Materials are donated FREE OF CHARGE to local non-profit agencies helping students and education.
- Results of the positive impact that each school made in the community are communicated with every school.
Intermediate/ Junior High/ High Schools
- A student organization agrees to partner with greenLockers, and gets approval from the school administration – we will provide a note that the organization can give to the school administration.
- Clean-out dates are communicated to the greenLockers team.
- Student organization advertises the project in their school (we have videos if desired).
- Containers are provided (if student organization does not have any).
- Student organization places the containers in the hallways on the first locker clean-out day.
- Students in the school help make a real difference in their community by donating items; instead of just throwing them away.
- Student organization collects, consolidates, and stores collected items until after the last clean-out day (i.e., need some approved space to stage the materials until locker clean-out days are finished).
- On or after the last locker clean-out day, the student organization sorts the collected supplies separating trash from the usable supplies
- Containers and lost and found materials (if available) are picked up by the greenLockers team in a timely manner.
- Materials are donated FREE OF CHARGE to local non-profit agencies helping students and education.
- Results of the positive impact that each school made in the community are communicated with every school.
College
- A student organization agrees to partner with greenLockers, and gets approval from the Resident Hall Directors – we will provide a note explaining the project that the student organization can give to the RDs
- Clean-out dates for the resident halls are communicated to the greenLockers team.
- Student organization advertises the project in their school (we have videos and/or paper posters if desired).
- Containers are provided (if student organization does not have any).
- Student organization places the containers in the hallways on the first locker clean-out day.
- Students in the school help make a real difference in their community by donating items (including textbooks); instead of just throwing them away.
- Containers and lost and found materials (if available) are picked up by the greenLockers team in a timely manner.
- Materials are donated FREE OF CHARGE to local non-profit agencies helping students and education.
- Results of the positive impact that each school made in the community are communicated with every school.

Why it works – the top 10?
- There is no extra pull on a school’s resources – financially or staff-wise.
- Adults and children alike naturally want to help others, if it is at little cost to them.
- It could help supplicate local school resources – especially in the inner-city.
- It is easy for the student body to understand, and takes little to no extra effort on their part.
- Participating in this project is not a risk to the student’s peer status.
- Students are more likely to contribute when they see fellow students (NHS, 5-star, student council, etc…) leading the charge.
- It provides an opportunity for the younger generation to contribute to society. . . on their own!
- The project itself is NOT a long, drawn out process. . . instead, results are seen very quickly.
- Your school can “go green” by saving thousands of pounds from the landfill!
- This is our 5th year – and that experience allows us to tailor the project to each school.
